Plan would extend rail line to Washington casino

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Puyallup Tribe wants to see Tacoma's new light-rail line hook up to its new casino. The city of Tacoma is listening.

The city and the tribe are talking about extending the city's new 1.6-mile streetcar line about one-quarter mile east to Portland Avenue.

The $200 million casino and hotel complex is scheduled to open in 2004.

"This is in the dream stage right now," John Weymer, the tribe's spokesman, said. "For the tribe, the obvious advantage would be the train taking people from the city center to the casino, or close to the casino."

At the city's request, Weymer said, the tribe agreed to put up half the money for a feasibility study, expected to cost about $25,000.
