Blood donations set for weekend
Although the blood crisis in Southern Nevada has been downgraded from an emergency to a critical appeal, United Blood Services plans to continue collecting supplies on Saturday and Sunday.
This is an unprecedented move because the centers are usually closed on Sunday, Dan Perlstein, United Blood Services spokesman, said.
On Saturday all centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday the West Charleston Boulevard center will be open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
All blood types are needed, but donors with blood types A-negative and O are in short supply, Perlstein said.
Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds. It takes about 45 minutes to donate blood. Donors can call 233-9620 for operating hours, locations, appointments and eligibility questions.
River manager is named
Terry Fulp has been named the manager for the River Operations Group of the Boulder Canyon Operations Office in the Lower Colorado Region, the Bureau of Reclamation announced.
The River Operations Office is responsible for scheduling water and power delivery for Hoover, Davis and Parker dams to customers in Arizona, California, Nevada and Mexico.
Fulp has been a Bureau of Reclamation employee since 1989.
Inmate escapes from boot camp
An inmate escaped from the Indian Springs Boot Camp at about 4:45 a.m. Thursday, the Nevada Department of Corrections reported.
Joshua Martinez, 22, was still missing as of this morning. He was wearing heavy clothing, including two pairs of sweat pants and a heavy coat. He was serving a 190-day sentence for conspiracy to violate the controlled substance act.
He is described as Hispanic with a shaved head, brown eyes and a fair complexion, standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 148 pounds.
Anyone with information is asked to call 486-6491.
