Election 2002: State Controller

Incumbent Republican Kathy Augustine and Democrat John Lee, an assemblyman, are battling over who has traveled the most in their government positions.

Lee has strongly criticized Augustine for what he calls excessive travel in the job.

Augustine, a former assemblywoman and state senator, points to her success in collecting state debt. She has hired two private debt-collection firms to start collecting more than $143 million owed to state agencies.

She says about $100,000 a month is coming in, and the two private firms get only a percentage of what they collect.

Lee, a three-term assemblyman from Las Vegas, says the job could be done better by the state office instead of hiring outside firms. He says he has more experience to manage the controller's office, based on his business background.

Independent American candidate Lisa Black, 33, is a legal assistant who says she would seek greater accountability to the people of Nevada, keep control of government spending and devote her entire attention to the office.

Libertarian candidate Chuck Eby did not respond to requests for information.
