Election 2002: Senate District 5
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:53 a.m.
Five-term Assemblywoman Sandra Tiffany and state Board of Education member John Hawk are facing each other.
Tiffany, a 53-year-old Republican who runs a small business, has been an Assembly co-speaker pro tempore and has served on the Ways and Means and Education committees.
If re-elected, she has pledged to support legal efforts to defeat a Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, protect seniors from telemarketing fraud and work for stronger regulatory oversight of nursing homes.
Hawk, a 28-year-old Democrat, works as an education consultant for the Clark County School District and as a University of Nevada, Las Vegas math instructor. He wants to rid the government of partisan bickering by focusing on consensus building and teamwork.
