Election 2002: Secretary of State

Incumbent Republican Dean Heller is after his third term -- the two-term limit went into effect after he was in office -- and faces minor opposition. As chief election officer in Nevada, Heller has campaigned to get more people to register and to vote.

He's opposed by Democrat William Hamma, who ran eight years ago for treasurer. Hamma called Heller pompous because he requires his staff to call him "Mr. Heller."

Independent American candidate Christopher Hansen of Henderson has provided the only fireworks in the campaign. He has accused Heller of not enforcing the election laws equally.

Hansen also filed a complaint with the state Ethics Commission alleging Heller libeled him in published reports with remarks suggesting Hansen would not enforce the laws if he were elected.

Lois Avery, the Natural Law candidate, has run several times for political office and has worked 24 years with her husband in the Washoe County engineering firm and she has been active in local affairs. Paul A. Lenart, the Green Party candidate is a Las Vegas health-care professional and an active union organizer.
