Election 2002: County Treasurer

The county treasurer is responsible for the billing, collection and disbursement of all property taxes and other county funds, as well as managing county investment portfolios.

Incumbent Democrat Laura Fitzpatrick faces Republican Lewis A. Byer and Independent American Rebecca Perry.

Fitzpatrick originally was appointed to fill an unfinished term in 1998. Later that year she was elected to a four-year term.

A certified public accountant, she has more than 20 years' experience in accounting and finance. She also served for seven years as deputy state treasurer for Michigan.

Byer has worked in finance, food operations and the funeral business for the past 30 years, owning several businesses and serving as chief executive for a number of private companies, as well as working for the federal government and several area casinos. He was one of the founding stockholders of the Boston Chicken Corp., now known as Boston Market.

The Republican challenger also helped found the Las Vegas Downtown Central Development Committee seven years ago to clean up crime on Fremont Street.

Rebecca Perry did not respond to requests for information.
