Election 2002: Constable

The constable serves court papers and enforces court notices and evictions.

Las Vegas

Incumbent Democrat Robert "Bobby G" Gronauer faces Republican Tom Savage.

Gronauer was elected Las Vegas constable in 1998 after 30 years as a Metro Police officer. He was chosen as "Constable for the Year 2002" by the National Constable Association.

Savage, a retired chief of federal police, spent most of his career in criminal investigation. He was also an Army intelligence and security officer and belongs to several law enforcement associations.

Henderson

The Henderson constable race has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride, since one of the three candidates -- Independent American Nicholas Alexander Hansen -- was barred from the race in District Court and then reinstated by the Nevada Supreme Court in a dispute over his qualifications and age.

Hansen, who turns 21 in February, is running against Democrat John J. Cahill and Republican incumbent Earl T. Mitchell.

Hansen says his qualifications include being physically fit and organized, and describes himself as "a laid-back young man who wants to be in office."

Cahill, a retired juvenile parole and probation officer, worked 30 years as a District Court officer at Spring Mountain Youth Camp, Child Protective Services and Child Haven.

Mitchell, the incumbent, seeks his third term in office after working more than 16 years as a Henderson Police officer. That department endorsed him.

North Las Vegas

Democrat incumbent Herb Brown squares off against Republican Steven Bergstrom in a repeat of the 1998 race.

Brown was a North Las Vegas police officer for 22 years and has also been a U.S. marshal.

Bergstrom worked as a police officer in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1975 and is currently a registered representative for Washington Squares Securities, an investment firm.
