The county clerk's office oversees all records for District Court, Family Court and the County Commission. It also issues marriage licenses and handles passport applications.
The race pits incumbent Democrat Shirley Parraguirre against Republican Gilbert A. "Gil" Avila, Independent American Dawn Pizzorno Hansen and Natural Law candidate Christy Russell.
Parraguirre, who was elected in 1998, has 40 years of experience in law, including 22 years as a paralegal and 18 years as a judicial executive assistant. She has helped bring court case records online and is working on doing the same for marriage license applications.
Avila, a private consultant on government relations, was senior staff assistant to former California Gov. George Deukmejian and special assistant to the California attorney general. His goals include training employees to better serve disabled and senior citizens.
Hansen has worked with the Reno City Advisory Board. She said she would work to eliminate the marriage license requirement.
Russell, a market coordinator for Caprice Entertainment, said she "would like to have all fines and tickets paid over the Internet when possible."
