Election 2002: Assembly District 8

Assembly Majority Leader Barbara Buckley, a Democrat who has served in the Legislature since 1995, faces Republican Kevin Child at the polls.

Neither had primary races for the seat in southwest Las Vegas Valley.

Buckley, 41, is an attorney and executive director of Clark County Legal Services. In her four terms she sponsored legislation on consumer protection, health care and education.

She is the vice chairwoman of Commerce and Labor Committee and serves on committees for education, judiciary and procedures and ethics.

Buckley hopes to expand prescription drug programs, increase education funding and protect buyers from purchasing unsafe rebuilt vehicles.

Child, 40, works in real estate, is active in a citizen police committee and is a volunteer firefighter.

His platform includes reducing taxes for senior citizens, tort reform and education. His motto is FAN, "fairness, accountability and what's good for Nevadans."

The district has more than 12,100 registered voters, more than 5,800 Democrats and nearly 3,900 Republicans.
