Election 2002: Assembly District 5
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:20 a.m.
Republican Valerie Weber and Democrat Dr. John Ellerton are vying for the seat vacated by Barbara Cegavske, who is running for the state Senate.
The seat represents part of the southwest Las Vegas Valley.
Weber, a business development manager with a sand and gravel company, has 20 years of experience in nonprofit health care management and served as executive director of Associated Builders and Contractors until last year.
She wants to change construction defect law to decrease the potential for frivolous lawsuits. Weber says she will support tax dollars for Southern Nevada roads and schools.
She was appointed in 2000 to the Education of Displaced Homemakers board by Gov. Kenny Guinn.
Ellerton, 53, is an oncologist who owns Cancer Consultants.
A resident of more than 20 years, he is focusing on improving medical coverage for Nevada's working poor and options for long-term care.
He says lawmakers must deal with the fundamentals in the areas of education, transportation, jobs and the response to emergency situations.
The district has more than 20,900 registered voters, more than 8,800 Republicans and more than 8,400 Democrats.
