Election 2002: Assembly District 41

Incumbent Democrat David Parks will face a Republican and an Independent American in the general runoff for the seat in western Henderson.

Republican Phillip Dane squeaked out a primary victory by 17 votes to face Parks, who had no primary opponent, and Independent American Patricia Saye.

Parks, 58, a consultant, was first elected to the Assembly in 1996 and has served three terms. He was the assistant majority whip in 1999 and the assistant majority floor leader in 2001.

An Air Force veteran formerly stationed at Nellis Air Force Base, Parks supports education funding, a fair and equitable tax system, improved senior medical care and treatment and affordable housing and utility costs.

Dane, 82, a seniors' activist, says his life experience qualifies him for candidacy.

He opposes the National Teachers Association resolution calling for teachers in kindergarten to grade 12 to observe October as "Gay/Lesbian History Month." He also supports the same-sex marriage constitutional ban initiative and a school voucher program.

Saye, 53, a caregiver, is a columnist for the Las Vegas Tribune, a radio talk show host and a member of several community service organizations and clubs.

She vows to submit reasonable bills and stop bills that would usurp personal rights or increase taxes. She also said she would oppose federal government intervention into people's lives.

There are nearly 15,600 registered voters in the district. Among them are more than 7,100 Democrats and more than 5,300 Republicans.
