Election 2002: Assembly District 37

Democrat Marcus Conklin and Republican Francis Allen pulled out narrow primary victories to get a shot in the general runoff for the newly created seat representing a growing sector of northwest Las Vegas.

Conklin garnered 49 percent of the vote in a three-person race, but managed to win by only 106 votes in the Democratic primary.

Allen had it a little tougher, winning by just nine votes in a four-person GOP race.

Conklin, 32, a business manager, is running on a platform that calls for keeping costs for quality health care low, better education, economic vitality and improved child welfare.

He is a founding board member and treasurer of Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth and helped establish the Project Safe Place in Las Vegas.

Allen did not respond to the Sun's requests for information.
