Election 2002: Assembly District 28

For a second time in two years incumbent Vonne Chowning faces Libertarian James Dan for the seat that represents a portion of North Las Vegas.

Nevada Libertarians have focused on this race, spending money to get out the vote.

Chowning, 59, squeaked out a 62-vote victory in the Democratic primary. A real-estate agent and former high school foreign languages teacher, she is a member of both the county and state Democratic Central Committees and has served six terms since first being elected in 1989.

Her platform includes funding for teacher training and other education issues, improved transportation and consumer protection. She has sponsored and helped pass consumer protection laws.

Dan, 51, a computer consultant, has been involved with a number of organizations that assist youth, including Candlelighters for Children With Cancer, Boys and Girls Clubs of North Las Vegas and Child Haven.

He served as chairman of the Libertarian Party of Nevada from 1995 to 1998 and was a member of the Future Freedom Foundation. He also served on the Libertarian National Committee from 1993 to 1996.

His platform calls for better schools, lowering utility bills and keeping nuclear waste out of Nevada.
