Election 2002: Assembly District 22

Incumbent Republican David Brown faces Democrat Caren Levenson and Independent American Jesse Harris for a shot at a second term in the seat that represents a large portion of the southeast Las Vegas Valley.

Brown, 39, owner of a construction law practice, has served as a member of the Legislative Commission and on the subcommittees on regulation review and the Public Lands-Wilderness Study Area.

He supports limits on government spending, changing construction defect statutes to permit contractors to make repairs, more funding for classrooms and corporate accountability.

Levenson, 44, an administrative assistant and member of the Clark County Yucca Mountain Advisory Board and state and county Democratic Central Committees, is running on a platform that includes maintaining affordable and accessible health care.

She also will seek funding for education in schools and to keep nuclear waste out of Nevada.

Harris, 21, a computer technician, wants the state to take control of vast federal land holdings in Nevada and to put more control of schools in the hands of the public, including alternatives to public schools such as Internet classes.

He also wants an investigation into insurance companies in the medical malpractice crisis.

The district has more than 38,800 registered voters -- the most of any Southern Nevada Assembly district -- with more than 18,300 Republicans and more than 13,900 Democrats.
