Election 2002: Assembly District 20

Two seasoned political veterans will square off for the newly created seat that represents a widespread part of southern and eastern Clark County, including Boulder City, Mesquite and Searchlight.

Republican Joe Hardy, a Boulder City councilman, meets Democrat Gene Segerblom, a former assemblywoman.

Hardy, 53, is a family doctor who serves on the Clark County Health District board. He is vice president of the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition and is mayor pro tempore of Boulder City.

He is focusing on tort reform, accountability in education, balancing needs versus wants in taxation proposals and mitigating the Nevada Test Site. He supports Question 2, the marriage-protection initiative.

Segerblom, 84, is a free-lance writer and retired teacher who served four terms in the Legislature. She also was a Boulder City councilwoman and a founder and vice president of Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum.

She wants more funding for education, back-to-basics schooling, lower costs of prescription drugs for seniors, a patient's bill of rights, tourism promotion and preservation of historic sites.

The district has more than 22,500 registered voters, more than 11,300 Republicans and more than 7,400 Democrats.
