Election 2002: Assembly District 2

A local doctor who unseated a three-term incumbent in the Republican primary is facing an Independent American candidate.

No Democrat entered the race.

Dr. Garn Mabey, 44, an obstetrician/gynecologist and past president of the Clark County OB/GYN Society, narrowly defeated incumbent Merle Berman and faces IAP hopeful Brian Barnes for the seat on the western side of the Las Vegas Valley.

Mabey is committed to resolving the medical malpractice insurance crisis, an issue that has ebbed since a special legislative session reached initial reforms this summer.

Mabey's other issues include liability reform for nonmedical professions whose rates also are rising because of increased lawsuits, greater accountability in education and no state income tax.

Barnes did not respond to the Sun for requests for information.

The district has more than 26,400 registered voters, more than 12,700 Republicans and nearly 9,300 Democrats.
