Election 2002: Assembly District 18
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:16 a.m.
Incumbent Democrat Mark Manendo is running for his fifth term against Ken Jarvis, a Republican who is running his entire campaign on the Internet and says he is accepting no campaign contributions.
The district represents a portion of the southeast Las Vegas Valley.
Manendo, 35, is a consultant.
He has served as the Assembly's assistant majority whip. He served as vice chairman of the Judiciary, Education and Health and Human Services committees at the 2001 Legislature.
Manendo wants to reduce the state's legal blood alcohol limit to 0.08; reduce the distance elementary students must walk to 1 1/2 miles; create rent justification for residents of manufactured housing; and create a statewide no-call list and fines for telemarketers who call people on that list.
Jarvis, 71, is a retired computer consultant and C-SPAN junkie. He pledged to take no campaign contributions and to conduct his entire campaign online.
Jarvis wants a sales tax on advertising to raise what he says will be an additional $50 million a year for the state coffers. He opposes attempts to liberalize drug laws and wants second-time convicted sex offenders to be castrated.
The district has more than 19,100 registered voters, more than 9,200 Democrats and more than 6,500 Republicans.
