Election 2002: Assembly District 16
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:15 a.m.
Incumbent Democrat John Oceguera faces Republican Rich Strickland for the eastern Las Vegas Valley district seat.
Oceguera, 34, is a North Las Vegas Fire Department captain and a law student. Strickland, 52, is a financial planner.
Neither had a primary race.
Oceguera is focused on supporting working families, finding innovative ways to help under-insured families get good health care, improving public safety and schools and offering career development and retraining programs.
Strickland, a Las Vegas resident of 25 years, has been working on local political campaigns since 1990.
He says as a financial planner he can combat lawmakers who have been spending money with no accountability.
He opposes any plans to institute a state income tax to address a $270 million spending deficit. He says more responsible spending is needed, using as an example that teachers are spending their own money to buy school supplies while school districts buy new furniture for administrators' offices.
