Election 2002: Assembly District 13
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:13 a.m.
Republican Chad Christensen and Democrat Mike Slater, who each garnered more than half of the votes in their three-candidate primaries, square off for the district that represents western Clark County and Mount Charleston.
They are vying to replace Dennis Nolan, who is running for the state Senate.
Christensen, 32, a financial adviser and partner in a financial group, got 57 percent of the primary vote. Slater, 32, executive director of the Nevada Interfaith Council for Worker Justice, got nearly 52 percent.
Christensen backs small-business tax incentives, choice in education, tort reform for doctors, Realtors and builders and Question 2, the marriage initiative.
He is a soccer coach and an Eagle Scout leader.
Slater said his job has put him in touch with working families and religious and community leaders. He says it has seasoned him for the challenges of office that include addressing better wages, affordable health care, worker rights and education.
He serves on a Clark County committee that addresses economic diversity and a Clark County School District committee that promotes children's success in their studies.
Slater said his focus will be on quality health care including affordable prescription drugs and a broad-based business tax.
There are 34,200 registered voters in the district, more than 15,200 Republicans and more than 13,000 Democrats.
