Election 2002: Assembly District 1
Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 | 11:07 a.m.
Incumbent Democrat Tom Collins faces Republican Doug Opolka and Independent American Peggie Williams.
Collins, 52, a journeyman electrical contractor and strong union advocate, has served four two-year terms representing the North Las Vegas district. He wants to continue to fight Yucca Mountain by establishing entry point inspections for truckers.
Opolka did not respond to the Sun's requests for information, but is a perennial candidate for office, having most recently run in and lost races for Las Vegas City Council Ward 6 last year and Las Vegas mayor in 1999.
Williams, 49, is a gifted specialist teacher. She is a co-owner of four businesses: a boutique, a beauty salon, an antique store and a gun store.
Her platform includes reducing property and gasoline taxes, judicial reform, retaining rights of gun owners and reducing the number of students in federally funded resource classes.
There are more than 19,900 registered voters in the district, about 9,000 Democrats and about 7,500 Republicans.
