Beltway billboard moratorium established

The Clark County Commission put a moratorium on new applications for billboards along the Las Vegas Beltway on Wednesday.

The commission, acting as the zoning board, put the moratorium in effect until the end of the year or until new zoning regulations governing distances between the signs can be approved.

Billboards have become a contentious issue along the beltway in the southwest Las Vegas Valley. Since passage of a new billboard ordinance earlier this year, the county has received dozens of applications for new signs.

Some citizen activists and county staff have become concerned that all the new signs would bring "visual blight" to the area. County planning staff is writing a new ordinance that would increase the 500-foot separation requirement between signs along the beltway.

Chuck Pulsifer, Clark County planner, said the new ordinance will likely be introduced Nov. 6 and could come up for debate and possible enactment Nov. 20.
