Savvy wine buys: Zenato Pinot Grigio ‘01

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 | 8:40 a.m.

A few weeks ago we tasted a Pinot Grigio (Italian for the varietal also known as Pinot Gris in France) from California, so it is interesting to compare it with one from Italy. This wine, from Italy's northeast region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, is lighter and fresher than its California cousin, but at only 12 percent alcohol it is more of an aperitif than a food wine.

Still, it has good fruit, and is nice when chilled with lighter fare, say, figs with prociutto, or a nice tomato and Bufala mozzarella cheese platter. It's the kind of wine that grows on you, though, and at these prices, a few bottles make sense.

Available at Albertsons and Cost Plus, $9.49.
