Juco standout gives commitment to UNLV

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 | 9:34 a.m.

UNLV basketball coach Charlie Spoonhour received a verbal commitment on Tuesday from a player who could be the heir apparent to Dalron Johnson.

Chris Adams, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound forward from San Francisco City College who averaged 16 points and eight rebounds as a freshman, picked the Rebels over Fresno State.

"He got back (Tuesday) morning from his visit there," Rams coach Patrick Springer said. "We sat down and we talked. Then he called (Fresno State) Coach (Ray) Lopes and Coach Spoonhour to tell them he was going to UNLV."

Springer, a former assistant at San Jose State, called Adams "a complete player with a huge basketball I.Q. He's more of a perimeter type of player than a post player. ... He's not as athletic as Dalron but he's probably more skilled. Dalron is just a monster athlete. He's not that. But he knows how to play the game and has good character."

Springer said Adams would sign with UNLV on Nov. 6, the first day of the early national letter of intent signing period.
