Henderson council briefs for Oct. 16, 2002

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 | 9:47 a.m.

Price for land takes a jump

A lobbying effort by Henderson attorney John Marchiano on behalf of a Las Vegas developer helped convince Henderson property management staff to purchase a 5-acre parcel for more than twice the city's original appraisal.

On Tuesday the Henderson City Council approved paying developer and former Laughlin casino executive John Midby $1.3 million for an undeveloped parcel southwest of St. Rose Parkway and Manhattan Road.

The land will complement 10 adjacent acres already owned by the city and planned as the future site of a satellite sewage treatment facility.

The city in August offered Midby $653,000 for the 5-acre parcel, but Marchiano told city staff that Midby had planned to build a senior assisted living facility, increasing the value of the land, John Rinaldi, director of property management, said.

Tavern plan put on hold

A plan to update Henderson's liquor laws was put on hold Tuesday to address concerns raised by businesses and council members.

Casinos and tavern owners have expressed concern about the introduction of $60,000 origination and transfer fees for taverns, as well as proposed exemptions on distance requirements for taverns in resort village areas.

Casinos also want distance exemptions for individually owned taverns within a casino resort, David Lee, director of business licensing, said.

Councilwoman Amanda Cyphers has also said she wants to maintain distance requirements between day-care facilities and taverns. She also wants to establish buffers for residential areas.

Mayor Jim Gibson asked for businesses to return with comments.
