Company sues ‘Net operator

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 | 11:15 a.m.

Mandalay Resort Group sued in U.S. District Court to stop an Albuquerque company and its owner from using its SLOTS A FUN trademark as a link to online pornographic advertisements.

Mandalay, which owns the Slots A Fun casino in Las Vegas, said Telnet Inc. and its owner Edward Gifford registered the domain name "slotsofun.com" in 1999, linked it to another domain name "luckyrollcasino.com," which was in turn linked to an online casino "Casino On Net."

"Once a Web user attempted to close the website, the user was then bombarded with numerous graphic pornographic website advertisements that would 'pop up' one after the other, thereby preventing the user from just merely closing out of the website," the suit said. "The Web user would be 'mouse-trapped' by these pornographic advertisements and the only way of ridding the screen of these advertisements was to close out of the Web browser entirely."

Mandalay, which said the defendants derived commission income from Casino On Net, wants to recover the "slotsofun.com" domain name.

The defendants could not be reached for comment on the allegations.
