Have your spooky yard judged

The Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, Henderson, is hosting its second annual Spooktacular Yard Decorating Contest.

The contest is open to Henderson residents and is limited to the first 30 entries received. The entry deadline is Tuesday, with judging from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 and Oct. 30.

Residents may enter their yard decorations in one of three categories: spooky, children's/harvest, and use of lights. Awards will be given for first place, second place and honorable mentions.

Jazzed on Education raises scholarships

The Nevada Hotel & Lodging Association, Nevada Restaurant Association and Nevada Hospitality Foundation will present "Jazzed on Education," the fifth annual statewide scholarship and school-to-career fund-raiser, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in The Orleans' Mardi Gras Ballroom.

The event will feature a Mardi Gras experience complete with gourmet Southern hors d'oeuvres, wines and spirits and live entertainment, followed by a silent auction.

The festivities include special guest appearances by Clint Holmes, Darren Romeo, David Van Such Jazz Band and the Fifth Avenue Jazz Quartet.

The scholarship ball will award more than 30 scholarships and honor Nevada's "Educator of The Year," Claudine Williams, chairwoman of the board of Harrah's Las Vegas.

Tickets are $125 and can be purchased by calling 878-9272 or 878-2113. Proceeds from the event will support continuing and scholarship opportunities for hospitality students attending Nevada high schools and colleges.

Hike into history at Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge. To make required reservations or for more information on the following or upcoming programs, call 363-1922:

Stroll to Mask Canyon: A 2-3 mile moderate hike Saturday on a gravel roller coaster into the back yard of Lee Canyon.

Pebbles, Cobbles and Boulders: A three-mile strenuous hike Sunday. Discover how the rocks were created while scrambling, climbing and hopping through the canyon.

Grapevine Springs: An opportunity to explore the south side of the conservation area and see some of the petroglyphs in Red Rock on the four-mile moderate hike on Monday.

The Nevada Heritage Festival

will run from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Clark County Museum, 1830 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, and will feature historic craft demonstrations, gemologist evaluations, exhibits, music, silent auction and food and drinks. For more information, call 455-7955.

The League of Women Voters

of Las Vegas Valley will host a breakfast meet at 10 a.m. Saturday to discuss the pros and cons of state and county questions on the November general election ballot. Call 464-7887.
