Bishop Gorman girls claim Sunset golf title

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002 | 9:04 a.m.

Sondia Gogue, Justina Yu, Katy Barrett and Mod Miranda paced Sunset Region girls golf throughout the season, so it seemed appropriate that the quartet battled it out for region tournament honors Tuesday at Stallion Mountain Country Club.

Durango's Gogue claimed the individual victory with a sterling 72, while Bishop Gorman's Yu carded a 75 to lead the Gaels to the team title in the 18-hole tournament. Three Gaels finished in the top eight, as Clare Schneider and Shannon Wong both shot 90 to tie for seventh.

Barrett of Palo Verde and Miranda of Cimarron-Memorial tied for third place with scores of 79.

Gorman's total of 462 barely held off Palo Verde, which shot 471, to claim the region team crown. The third and final berth to next week's 4A state tournament went to Durango, which shot a 514 to scrape past Centennial by five strokes.

Cimarron finished a close fifth at 527, followed by Bonanza (558), Sierra Vista (587), and Cheyenne (635).

The top five individuals from teams that did not qualify for the state playoffs also earn berths to the state tournament. Those players are: Miranda, Centennial's Marisa Heenan (93), Cimarron's Elizabeth Brooks (96), Centennial's Bailey Mosier (97) and Cimarron's Christine Prato (97).

The 4A state tournament, a 36-hole event, will be held Oct. 22-23 at Thunder Canyon Country Club in Washoe County. Durango is the defending state champion.
