Green Valley girls take Sunrise crown
Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002 | 9:28 a.m.
The dream season continues for the Green Valley girls golf team.
The Gators placed five golfers in the top seven finishers to run away with the Sunrise Region tournament Monday at Black Mountain. Green Valley's Chelsea Pendleton shot a 79 to win the 18-hole tournament while teammate Nicole McGirr finished two strokes back with an 81.
Monica Brown of Green Valley and Chloe Nelson of Silverado shot 83 to share third-place honors.
The Gators' score of 423 easily outpaced second-place Silverado, which shot a 475. Foothill posted a 532 to earn the region's third and final team berth to the 4A state tournament.
Chaparral (583) finished fourth, followed by Basic (612), Valley (648) and Rancho (760).
The region victory is another feather in the Green Valley cap, coming just two weeks after the Gators broke the national record for consecutive dual match victories at 129 with a win over Coronado.
The top five individuals from teams that did not earn state berths also qualified for the state tournament. Those girls are: Valley's Kristin Chino (93); Chaparral's Sarah Chambers (98); Basic's Karen Smuskiewicz (98); Desert Pines' Kasarhri Franklin (102); Chaparral's Amy Munson (109); and Basic's Alicia Sheahan (109). Though Munson and Sheahan tied for fifth, they both earn state berths.
The Sunset Region tournament takes place today at Stallion Mountain. The state competition will be held Oct. 22-23 at Thunder Canyon Country Club in Washoe Valley.
