One Nevada tax break OK’d, another rejected

Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 | 11:09 a.m.

A Southern Nevada manufacturing company will get more than a quarter-million dollars in tax incentives from the Nevada Commission on Economic Development for an expansion project.

Commissioners on Wednesday approved a request from Milgard Manufacturing Inc., which applied for $141,330 in sales and use tax abatements, $6,400 in business tax abatements and $53,840 in sales and use tax deferrals. The company also will get a 10-year personal property tax abatement, estimated to be worth $90,000 over 10 years.

Milgard, which manufactures vinyl, aluminum and wood-clad windows and patio doors, has a manufacturing and distribution center serving the western United States from Las Vegas. The company plans a 150,000-square-foot expansion and would add 32 employees making an average of $15.91 an hour, joining a work force of 196.

The commission also rejected an application for incentives for GES Exhibition Services Inc., which sought more than $600,000 in abatements and deferrals.

GES, which manufactures booths for trade shows and conferences in Las Vegas and has a new plant on Lyndell Drive, said it would add 80 jobs with an average pay of $18.39 an hour to a work force of 433. Commissioners rejected the incentives because the plant does not meet some of the state's criteria for a manufacturing expansion.
