Woman killed in accident

A 51-year-old Las Vegas woman was killed about 8:20 a.m. Saturday when her car ran over her in a parking lot in the Francisco Centre shopping center at 2480 E. Desert Inn Road.

Betty Jean Jacobsen pulled her 2001 Chevrolet up to a curb with the manual transmission in neutral and the engine running, Metro Police said. She evidently thought she had engaged the emergency brake and got out of the vehicle, police said.

Jacobsen walked to the back of the vehicle as it began rolling backwards, police said. The vehicle struck her and she was thrown into a fire hydrant.

Medical personnel found Jacobsen dead at the scene.

Police checked the emergency brake and found that Jacobsen failed to fully engage the brake.
