Former employee sentenced

A former Treasure Island employee was sentenced to one year and a day in prison for selling some of the casino's slot machines and keeping the profits for himself.

Pedro Mata was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge David Hagen on Monday and ordered to pay $176,000 in restitution to the casino.

Between November 2000 and July 2001, Mata, a slot technical supervisor at Treasure Island, accepted payments for slot machines on behalf of the casino and posed as the director of slot operations, according to court documents.

Among the transactions made by Mata was a February 2001 sale of 116 slot machines to the owner of a gaming business in Ohio for about $95,000.

Mata plead guilty to wire fraud, and admitted that he used the money to pay off personal credit card debt, car loans, ski vacations, house payments and tax bills.
