Divers to help clean up lakes

Two ecology dives will be conducted in October to clean up litter in areas of Lakes Mead and Mohave.

Forever Resorts, a National Park Service concessioner; the Park Service and the Nevada Division of Wildlife are sponsoring the dives. A grant from Project AWARE Foundation, a nonprofit agency that supports water-related environmental projects, is paying for the cleanup.

Volunteer divers will meet at 9 a.m. on the day of each dive.

The first dive is scheduled for Sunday at Lake Mead's Callville Bay. The second is set for Oct. 19 at Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave.

The concessioner will donate supplies and employees to support the dive, while the government agencies will provide support boats, fuel and support personnel.

All volunteers will be provided lunch. The event will conclude with a barbecue at 5 p.m. each day. Volunteers will also be able to participate in a drawing for raffle prizes donated by Forever Resorts, vendors and local dive shops.

An ecology dive on Sept. 8 at Willow Beach removed 3,320 pounds of trash from the area.
