Burglar shot by homeowner

Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 | 9:31 a.m.

They chose the wrong house to break into.

A North Las Vegas man shot a would-be burglar in the rear end and sent his accomplices running from the home on the 4600 block of Rockpine Drive around 10 a.m. Monday, North Las Vegas Police Lt. Victor Dunn said.

One of the suspects jumped out a second-story window, but was not hurt, Dunn said.

The suspect who was shot was taken to University Medical Center. The gunshot wound was not life-threatening, Dunn said.

Police arrested four men, including the gunshot victim, and charged them with burglary with use of a deadly weapon and home invasion, Dunn said. The names of the suspects were not released because of the ongoing investigation into the incident, Dunn said.

The homeowner, who was not identified, was not charged with a crime.

"It appears his actions were in self-defense," a statement from police said.

Dunn said the suspects were going through the neighborhood knocking on doors looking for empty homes, and apparently thought they had found one.

But after they got into the house, the homeowner shot at them with a handgun, Dunn said.

The homeowner fired one shot, Dunn said. He did not know if any of the burglars fired a shot.

Dunn said he did not know if any other homes in the area were burglarized Monday.
