Melvin Matlock
School: Centennial
Class: Senior
Sport:Football
Last week: Matlock, a running back for unbeaten Centennial, stepped up in a relief role in the Bulldogs' win over Bishop Gorman. Subbing for injured Devin Patterson, Matlock ran for three touchdowns to help keep Centennial undefeated. "Melvin's been a threat all year long," Bulldogs coach Greg Murphy said. "We expect that from Melvin because he has that ability." Matlock has totaled six touchdowns on the season, including two receiving scores. Matlock also makes a big impact for the Bulldogs in the defensive secondary as a cornerback, helping lead Centennial to a 4-0 start.
Lauren Bucherie
School: Coronado
Class: Senior
Sport: Volleyball
Last week: A senior middle blocker for the Cougars, Bucherie's strong early season work has helped Coronado fly out of the gate to a 9-1 mark. Last week, Bucherie put down 14 kills to push the Cougars past Las Vegas and her 14 aces spearheaded a win over Rancho. "She's a senior captain, leader on the team," Coronado coach Jay Renneker said. "She motivates the girls. She has a great work ethic, which is contagious." Bucherie is one of five returning starters for a Coronado team that is greatly improved from last year's 8-13 showing.
