Letter: Ford only good GOP president
Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 | 9:06 a.m.
I have been involved in politics since I turned 15 years of age in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
My first initiation into the Republican Party's penchant for dirty tricks came during the Herbert Hoover-Al Smith campaign. Religious bigotry reared its ugly head against Al Smith, a Catholic. The Republican cry was "Hoover in the White House: Smith in the Backhouse!" It was disgusting.
Since then we have not had one credible Republican president -- with one exception. I believe Gerald Ford is a decent man. History should place all the rest where they belong -- on the negative side of presidents.
They put avarice and self-interest before the people, just as President Bush is doing right now.
