RENO -- Some opening day glitches didn't dampen the excitement as hundreds of local and visiting gamblers turned out for the opening of Reno's latest hotel-casino.
The Golden Phoenix Hotel Casino and Resort opened to gamblers Wednesday at what used to be the Flamingo Reno.
"It's like when you throw a party and you say, 'Gosh, I wonder if anyone's going to come?' " said marketing director Jo Ann Cady as she surveyed the swarm of midday guests.
Early birds donned complimentary hats and strands of beads as they waited to be among the first to try out the casino's slots and table games.
"We've been waiting for it to open," said Angie Saldana, 27, of Reno, who came to the grand opening with her parents. "They have a lot of machines that I don't see other places."
