Sierra Pacific Resources' Nevada Power Co. said Tuesday it signed six contracts for wind and geothermal power that will help the state's largest electric utility comply with new rules for using renewable energy.
The contracts with Desert Queen Wind LP, Advanced Thermal Systems, Earth Power Resources Inc., Ormat Nevada Inc. and Ely Wind Co. will supply Nevada Power as much as 227 megawatts of electricity, Sierra Pacific spokeswoman Faye Andersen said. One megawatt is enough power for 750 to 1,000 homes.
A Nevada law passed last year requires electric utilities to boost their use of renewable energy by 2 percent every third year until it accounts for 15 percent of their total energy sales.
