Critical blood shortage declared
United Blood Services has declared a "critical blood shortage" and is appealing to residents to donate blood.
Donor apathy and recent flu outbreaks are being blamed for blood shortage, according to a statement from the attorney general's office.
"Donating blood is safe, simple. quick and rewarding," Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said. "The people at United Blood Services have a talent for making donors comfortable, and you'll walk away knowing you could possibly save a life."
Apartment security guard is shot
A security guard was in fair condition this morning at University Medical Center after being shot twice by suspected drug dealers at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Arville Street, Metro Police said.
Police were looking for two Hispanic men wearing blue clothing in connection with the shooting, which happened around 7:20 p.m. at the Shadow Ridge Apartments, Lt. Richard Collins said.
Collins said the guard was working at the time and was not armed.
He said the guard, as he was driving on patrol, saw whom he thought were drug dealers. After he got out of the car he saw one of the men had a gun so he started to run away and was shot, Collins said.
"No words were exchanged," he said.
Driver, 20, killed in collision
A 20-year-old Las Vegas man died Friday after his car was hit by a truck driven by a Las Vegas man who was later arrested for driving under the influence, Metro Police said.
The dead man was identified today by the Clark County coroner's office as Carlo Prado.
The accident happened at El Capitan Way and Vista Del Cielo Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, police said. They said Juston Shearer, 20, was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck south on El Capitan when Prado's Toyota Corolla, attempting a turn, crossed into the path of the Ford.
Prado was taken to University Medical Center, but died shortly after getting there, police said.
Shearer was not injured in the accident and was arrested for driving under the influence, police said.
A passenger in Shearer's truck, Kevin Aldrige, 23, of Las Vegas, was injured in the crash. Police said Aldrige's injuries were moderate.
Henderson plans warrant relief
Most people with outstanding municipal warrants in Henderson can clear them without risk of arrest for three weeks in December.
The moratorium runs Dec. 2-20.
"Our primary objective is to provide defendants with an opportunity to clear warrants and pay their fines without the risk of arrest during the holiday season," Municipal Judge John Provost said.
Eligible defendants include those with warrants for failure to appear in court or failure to pay warrants.
Traffic cases not eligible for the reprieve include reckless or aggressive driving, passing a school bus, leaving the scene of an accident or fleeing the police.

Garage-burglary string probed
Nine garage burglaries were reported in the northwest area of Las Vegas between Oct. 15 and Nov. 20, and police are asking residents to check their garage doors for drill holes.
Each garage that was burglarized had a hole drilled in the door, Metro Police Lt. Larry Spinosa said, although he wouldn't give specifics on how the garages were entered. Golf clubs were the primary items stolen.
Residents whose garages were burglarized are urged to carefully examine their garage doors for drill holes.
Anyone with information on these burglaries is asked to call Sgt. Matt McCarthy in Metro's Property Crimes Unit at 229-5743 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
