VegasBeat — Timothy McDarrah: Partridges in a pair at Aladdin’s ‘X’

Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 | 9:41 a.m.

There may be a minireunion of "The Partridge Family" at the Aladdin Saturday night.

Keith and Danny -- David Cassidy and Danny Bonaduce -- are both slated to attend the premiere of "X," the new adult revue that has people either swearing at it or swearing by it.

Also slated to attend: Dick Clark; Joey Fatone, Lance "Spaceman" Bass and JC Chasez from 'N Sync; longtime Johnny Carson sidekick Ed McMahon; rockers Sammy Hagar and Gene Simmons; casino personalities/titans George Maloof (Palms) and Don Marrandino (Hard Rock); and pop artist Steve Kaufman.

So far, casts of most of the other adult-themed shows in Las Vegas -- such as "La Femme," "Splash" and "Thunder From Down Under" -- have checked out the new kid on the block, as have such local personalities as Clint Holmes, Robin Leach, Penn & Teller and Siegfried & Roy.

After Saturday's premiere, the "X" women will party at Curve inside the exclusive London Club.

Also, a revamped "Showgirls" just kicked off at the Samba Theatre at The Rio.

"Showgirls" producer Greg Thompson's wife, Sunny, recently left the cast to develop her own show (the Thompsons are in Biloxi, Miss., today auditioning a band for her new effort) and three women are following in her feathered headgear: Andrea Wagner, Tamula Browning and Julie Serene.

The best part of the show is when all three get into one oversize red dress and pretend to be the Supremes.

The show is an amiable romp through the history of showgirls, from Ed Walters' (Barbara Walters' father) Latin Quarter and the Copacabana to the Tropicana in Havana back to Ziegfield's Follies.

Light reading

Vanity Fair magazine has a regular feature titled Night Table Reading, where it asks three or four "It" girls -- and boys -- what is on their nightstand.

The December issue includes Hard Rock Hotel owner Peter Morton. He is plowing through "Boswell's London Journal: 1762-1763."

Morton told the glossy: "After having lived in London for 10 years, this is a wonderful and historic insight into London as seen by a young man seeking independence in the 1700s."

Goodman, good woman

That very well-dressed woman strolling through downtown streets with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman the other day was Maria Cuomo-Cole.

Cuomo-Cole is married to fashion designer Kenneth Cole, well known for his cutting-edge ads pushing a left-of-center agenda.

Cuomo-Cole and the mayor toured Bonanza View apartments, which were built with the assistance of HELP USA.

The 75-unit transitional housing facility intended to serve homeless veterans is preparing for its first tenants to move in.

HELP was founded by Cuomo-Cole's brother Andrew Cuomo, who started the do-good organization after helping guide his father, Mario Cuomo, to New York's statehouse in the 1980s and early 1990s. Andrew Cuomo also served in President Bill Clinton's Cabinet as Housing secretary.

Smart Art

Better start paying attention to Las Vegas glass artist Leslie Rankin.

The opening last week of her exhibition at Gallery P in Henderson, which is on display until Wednesday, brought out a staggering number of local notables.

Among those packed into the gallery like sardines: Judge Gil Yarchever, Kitty Boeddeker, USA Bank exec Cheryl A. Smith, Cadillac king Dallas "A.J." Dodd, Dr. Harold Orchow, attorney Jerry Kaufman, Susan Silva from the Green Valley High School Fine Arts Department, Dr. Witold J. Iglikowski and Merrill Lynch private banker Lorri Jackson.

Also spotted: Charles Waddell from District Attorney Stewart Bell's office, Gerald L. Ehrens, Margaret E. Maul of Maul Capital Management and June Beland, founder of the Women's Chamber of Commerce Nevada.

The evening was hosted by Joan Miro's old apprentice, Jospeh Palermo.

Rankin's 6-year-old twins, Jamie and Julia Yanchisin, and her husband, Tim Yanchisin, were also there to lend support.

Meow

A Las Vegas illusionist was proud to show his spots this week.

Silverton Hotel magic man Dirk Arthur just took delivery of a baby spotted African leopard.

It will join his menagerie, which already includes assorted Bengal tigers, snow tigers and African leopards.

The new arrival will be the featured star of an upcoming Animal Planet special based on Arthur's training procedures.

Pomp, circumstance

Henderson is the place to go to see the beautiful people.

On Saturday night Miss Nevada USA 2003 and Miss Nevada Teen USA 2003 will be crowned at the Fiesta Henderson.

The event is new to the locale and kicks off at 7 p.m.

Over study

Lainie Kazan, who opens a weekend stint tonight at Suncoast, had her first breakthrough as Barbra Streisand's understudy in "Funny Face" on Broadway in 1964.

She lasted all of two performances when filling in for Streisand. Kazan is too much of a professional to admit it, but the story goes that the real reason Babs dumped her is because she got rave reviews, and Streisand was jealous.

Kazan was replaced in the understudy role by a less-threatening young performer named Linda Gerard, who no one has heard much from in decades.
