Letter: Democrats must stop leaning right
Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 | 9:43 a.m.
Al Gore is beginning to sound like my kind of a Democrat. I agree with his proposal to reduce the tax cut for the rich and to shift it over to those in the middle-income brackets.
I also like his proposal for an approach to universal health care. The solution to Medicare relief (the cut of fees to doctors is a prelude for no care for many) and the whole health care problem should be a priority.
In contrast, the Bush administration wants to make the tax cut for the rich permanent. And they have no feeling for Medicare relief for the elderly nor any health care insurance relief for the needy. As usual, the GOP message is: The little people be damned.
Democrats need to put their feet steady on the ground and stop the trend to the middle, to the right, to me-too Republicanism. They need to stop the onrush of Bush and company to make the rich richer. Show them the liberalism of FDR, Harry Truman, Hubert Humphrey, Paul Wellstone -- the true heart of the Democratic Party.
