For Nov. 21, 2002
RYAN MEUIR
School: Las Vegas
Class: Junior
Sport: Football
Last week: The once one-dimensional Las Vegas offense is no longer just a passing attack, and Ryan Meuir is a big reason why the Wildcats are now running the ball well. The Wildcats' junior tailback carried the ball 18 times for 234 yards and a score in a 44-6 Sunrise Region semifinal victory over Basic last week. At just 5-foot-7 and 145 pounds, Meuir is not an imposing figure, but Las Vegas coach Kris Cinkovich said that his tailback is improving. "Ryan in particular is playing better," Cinkovich said. "He's running with some authority."
Amy Schlauder
School: Durango
Class: Junior
Sport: Volleyball
Last week: Before the region playoffs, Amy Schlauder said she had never been on a team as focused and determined as this year's Blazers. They now have the 4A state title to prove it. Schlauder, the team's setter, piloted a Durango squad that not only went undefeated against Nevada opponents, but lost just a single game (to Palo Verde) all season. Schlauder posted 30 assists, 11 digs, and six kills in a state semifinal win over Galena, then came back with 46 assists in the finals against Churchill County.
