Letter: ACLU only ones defending liberty
Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 | 9:16 a.m.
I have been a loyal working and contributing member of the Democratic Party since 1963, but that may need to change.
The Republican Party has moved so far to the right that its platform resembles that of the Montana Militia, and the Democratic Party seems to have taken up the positions of the former Republicans. There seems to be no one left to represent the essential interests of the real Democratic Party: individual liberty, the environment, health care and education.
The recent passage of the "USA Patriot Act" and now the "Homeland Security Act" constitute a continued movement toward a police state without significant opposition. The only real problem on the agenda for the Republicans is how to change the name of the Homeland Security Agency so that its initials become KGB.
I am stopping all contributions to the currently inept leadership of the Democratic Party and forwarding that money to the ACLU. At least they are hard at work protecting our constitutional freedoms.
