Draw of cards to settle race

Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 | 11:05 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- In Esmeralda County on Friday, there will be a draw of the cards to decide the tie contest for county commissioner between Dolores "Doc" Honeycutt and R.J. Gillum, who both polled 107 votes.

State Archivist Guy Rocha said the 1965 Legislature passed a law ordering that a tie vote would be decided by lot. He said the draw of the cards is the cleanest way to settle these issues.

In 1982 there was a tie vote in the primary election for clerk treasurer in Lander County, and the candidates drew cards. Rocha said both candidates drew 8s. So they drew again and an ace won the race. In 1972 there was a tie for Justice of the Peace in Gabbs and that was decided by a flip of the coin.

This will be the first time in a general election that a contest has been decided by a draw of cards, Rocha said.
