County deadline passes for removal of campaign signs

Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 | 11:30 a.m.

The deadline for candidates to remove campaign signs passed at midnight this morning, and those who still have signs up can expect a call from Clark County's public response office.

Those who do not remove signs could face a fine of $999 a day per sign, but public response manager Jim Foreman doesn't expect it to come to that.

"There are still a few big signs out there, but we're going to be on the phone reminding people to pick them up," Foreman said. "I wouldn't really be doing my job if we ended up taking people to court for fines."

If candidates don't pick up signs after getting a phone call, they will be mailed an official notice ordering their removal. Sometimes reaching candidates by phone after an election can be a challenge, Foreman said.

"It's amazing how many campaign managers are no longer around, but we still track everyone down," Foreman said.

There haven't been many complaints from residents about abandoned signs, and Foreman said the cleanup is moving along at a good pace.

"We heard from the state about how bad a year this was because of so many signs out there, but it's been good down here," Foreman said.
