Congressman calls for Internet gambling study

WASHINGTON -- A bill introduced Tuesday by Rep. John Conyers, Jr., a Detroit Democrat and a member of the House Judiciary Committee, would create a commission that would make recommendations to federal and state governments on regulating Internet gambling.
The bill is aimed at jump-starting dialogue about regulation but shouldn't be viewed as a drive toward legalization, Conyer staffers said.
Conyers said in a statement that federal and state gambling laws have been ineffective at regulating the Internet, a borderless world where consumers should be entitled to the same sorts of protections imposed on land-based casinos.
