Rebels’ baseball team signs four local players
Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 | 9:05 a.m.
UNLV head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle announced Monday the signing of nine players to national letters of intent. The class is comprised of nine high school players, four from Las Vegas, three from California and one from Oregon and Colorado respectively.
The 2002 fall class consists of four pitchers, two catchers, one outfielder, one infielder, and a two-way player.
The local signees were Bishop Gorman's Anthony Garcia and Russ Warthen, Silverado's Wes Johnson and Green Valley's Wes Tabor.
Garcia is a switch-hitting outfielder who hit .392 with nine home runs, 46 RBIs and a .753 slugging percentage. He was a first team All-Southern Nevada selection
Warthen has recorded a 16-4 record in two years at Gorman. He helped lead the Gaels to the state playoffs and was a first team All-Southern Nevada pick.
Johnson posted a 9-5 record with 68 strikeouts and a 2.12 ERA in 70 innings last spring.
Tabor has compiled a 14-6 record with 126 strikeouts in 119 innings with just 32 walks. His ERA was 2.60 as a sophomore and 2.20 as junior. Tabor was an All-Southern Nevada selection.
Zarndt, a local product out of Cheyenne High, becomes the third runner in school history to qualify for nationals. The national meet is Monday at Indiana State University.
Signing with the Rebels were Matt Edwards of Henderson and Andy Leadbetter of Orlando.
Edwards, a senior at Coronado High School, was the only player to shoot under par en route to capturing the Nevada individual state title last season.
Meanwhile, the women's golf team has received a letter of intent from Seema Sadekar of Aurora, Ontario.
Sadekar is the 28th-ranked high school senior in the country, according to the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings. She has played in the last two U.S. Girls Junior Championships.
