Tree of Memory benefits charities

Palm Mortuary is hosting its fifth annual "Tree of Memory" program now through Dec. 20, to honor deceased loved ones during the holiday season.

The program is offered to anyone in the community, whether or not they have used Palm Mortuary's services in the past.

Ornaments can be ordered at any one of Palm's six locations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by visiting the website (www.palmmortuary.com). All proceeds from the ornaments will be donated to three charities: Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada and Shade Tree Shelter.

Purchasers of ornaments may designate the charity of their choice. For more information, call 464-8314.

Cactus garden takes holiday colors

The ninth annual lighting of the Ethel M Chocolates Botanical Cactus Garden will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at 2 Cactus Garden Drive, Henderson.

More than 250,000 lights will be used as the cactus garden is illuminated from sundown to 10 p.m., seven days a week until Jan. 5.

The Consumer Credit Counseling Service, 3650 S. Decatur Blvd., Suite 32, is offering the class "Making Ends Meet and Dreams Come True," from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Learn methods to organize spending, reduce debt, and build and maintain a good credit history without making costly or hazardous mistakes.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge. To make required reservations or for more information on the following or upcoming programs, call 363-1922:

Wild Horses and Burros: Ongoing talks from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday about the wild horses and burros. Also, find how you can adopt one of the animals from several round-up facilities in the country.

Walk on the Wild Side: A two-mile moderate hike along the Oak Creek Canyon trail Thursday. Learn about the various wildlife that make their home in Red Rock.

Puma, Cougar -- The Cat of One Color: Learn the traits and adaptations of the large cat while hiking Red Rock's best six-mile loop Friday.

Relax: A three-mile easy hike with Ranger Melissa Friday.

See it All: A strenuous 11-mile hike on the Grand Circle Trail to see a lot of what Red Rock has to offer.

Storytelling in the Canyon: A program offered Sunday for kids ages 4-12 to join Ranger Vicki and enjoy the tales of long ago in Indian folklore.
