Editorial: Homes, landing pad are not a good mix

Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 | 5:38 a.m.

Residents in the area of Boulder Highway and Fremont Street are opposed to a helicopter landing pad at the Castaways, and for reasons that go beyond its incompatibility with the hotel's theme. Aside from the fact that castaways wouldn't be castaways if they were within walking distance of choppers constantly ferrying people in and out, there is the noise. Formerly known as the Showboat, the Castaways is located in a residential area, and people who live there are protesting the landing-pad proposal to the Las Vegas City Council.

The Las Vegas Planning Commission already voted unanimously against the proposal, citing not only the noise but the danger as well of constant flights so near neighborhoods. The hotel and a helicopter company have requested permission to build the pad, saying it would be a convenience for Castaways guests who enjoy aerial tours. They are appealing the Planning Commission's decision and the City Council is scheduled to hear the appeal Dec. 4. Our view is that the Planning Commission was correct in denying the proposal. If the Castaways gains a competitive edge by having a helicopter landing pad, then other neighborhood casinos will want one and a precedent will have been set. Commercial helicopter landings and take-offs are for airports, not neighborhoods.
