Chamber of Commerce still studying tax plan

Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 | 10:29 a.m.

Sides are beginning to form as businesses and organizations start to analyze the recommendations of the Governor's Task Force on Tax Policy that could determine how the state is taxed.

While Culinary Local 226 will begin to air television advertisements today calling for support of the recommendation for a broad-based business tax, the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce has not determined its position on the taxes.

"It's a complicated issue, and we want to make sure that all chamber members are educated on the different tax options and how they will affect their businesses," said Catherine Levy, spokeswoman for the chamber. "I anticipate that the chamber will take a decision, but there will be more discussion by the board."

The chamber is compiling the information from a recent survey of its members regarding possible business taxes, Levy said.

The task force has made five key recommendations to Gov. Kenny Guinn and the state's Legislative Counsel Bureau:

The Culinary Union has already decided to support the broad-based business tax with 30-second television ads that begin today.

The first of the ads focuses on Bank of America and the banking industry, said Culinary political director Glen Arnodo.

"It shows the profit made in the banking industry and the need for corporations to contribute to the education of the children of Nevada," Arnodo said. "The ads will focus on different areas and industries."

Arnodo said that the first ad, the only one cut so far, will run through Nov. 28. He added that he wasn't sure what the total cost of the ad buy was, but said "it wasn't a gigantic amount of money."
