Josh Daneshforooz
School: Foothill
Class: Senior
Sport: Football
Last week: With the rust from missing most of the season finally shaken off, Josh Daneshforooz helped Foothill survive a playoff scare against Chaparral. The Falcons' senior quarterback, injured for most of the season, racked up 275 yards (145 rushing, 130 passing) as the Falcons held off the Cowboys 21-20 in overtime. Daneshforooz ran for a short touchdown in the first quarter, then connected with wideout Jake Lamb for a scoring pass in the third quarter. Daneshforooz is also a good baseball player.
Meghan Mathews
School: Centennial
Class: Junior
Sport: Cross country
Last week: Following a strong performance at the Sunset Region meet, Meghan Mathews impressed once again at the 4A state championship. The Bulldogs' junior turned in a great time of 19 minutes, 22 seconds at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City, good for fifth overall. What's more, that time bested her own time of 19:36 from the Sunset Region meet, where Mathews finished third. At the state meet, Mathews was the second-best runner from Southern Nevada, placing behind only Natasha Wicks of Cimarron-Memorial. Mathews is also a standout basketball player, earning second-team All-Sunset Region honors a year ago.
